The moment you are trying to cross, in a split second your brain is able to decide when to stop, when to start, analyse the distance, everything. Doesn't seem like rocket science, isn't it? Now if I give you a problem statement, 80 feet wide road, 10 vehicles coming towards you, distance from you x, y,z.. speed a, b, c... Draw the trajectory of your path with respect to time. Now it seems like rocket science? Whats the difference? If you are someone who took science seriously, you may able to come to the answer, but in your own sweet time. One is driven by your experience of walking, your visual apparatus and the other by pen, paper and some formulas,one takes a few seconds and the other you should know.
